Effect of Intestinal Isehemia on Iron Absorption in Rabbits

Abstract
This experimental study was carried out for the Purpose of clarifying the mechanism of iron absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract. Intestinal ischemia was induced by narrowing the superior mesenteric artery in rabbits. The author observed changes in storage iron concentration of the liver, spleen, kidney, bone marrow and duodenum in the rabbits with narrowed mesenteric artery and in the rabbits repeatedly given iron by oral route after narrowing this artery. The obtained results were discussed and could be summarized as follows:
1. In the normal rabbits the storage iron concentration of the liver and spleen decreased in the late stage after narrowing the mesenteric artery.
2. In the rabbits with narrowed mesenterinc artery the storage iron concentration of the kidney increased in the early stage and those of the liver, spleen and bone marrow increased in the late stage after repeated iron administration.
3. It was suggested that the enhancement of iron absorption in hypoxia may be due to the hypoxic state of the gastro-intestinal wall.
